UNITE Members advocate for evidence-based Health Policies to strengthen Pandemic Preparedness

UNITE members Hon. Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen, from Malaysia, and Hon. Peter Stachura, from Slovakia, took the stage at the on ‘Risk Communication for Public Health Emergencies’ high-level meeting. Hosted at the National University of Singapore on November 6-7, 2024, this event fostered dialogue on best practices from the COVID-19 pandemic, with our members advocating for inclusive, evidence-based approaches to strengthen pandemic preparedness.

The overall aim of this conference was clear:  strengthen countries’ capacity to communicate health risks effectively during public health emergencies. Through bi-regional dialogue between Asia and Europe, participants explored best practices and identified lessons concerning Risk Communication during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, with a spotlight on implementing a whole-of-society approach. Discussions encouraged participants to reflect on how risk communication was positioned in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic and  how it can be better integrated within Pandemic Preparedness and Response (PPR) strategies in the future.

UNITE was honoured to have our members, Hon. Peter Stachura from Slovakia and Hon. Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen from Malaysia, participate in the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and Asia Centre for Health Security’s (ACHS) high-level meeting on Risk Communication for Public Health Emergencies. Our parliamentarians brought critical political perspectives to the discussions, advocating for evidence-based health policies that strengthen pandemic preparedness.

Hon. Stachura delivered an impactful presentation on how the Slovak Parliament approached public communication during COVID-19, sharing valuable insights on effective strategies. Both parliamentarians posed insightful questions to Singapore’s Health Minister, contributing to the dialogue on resilient and transparent health communication.

UNITE remains committed to empowering parliamentarians to drive effective, inclusive, and science-informed health policies worldwide.
