At the beginning of the month, UNITE Member Hon. Daniel Molokele, Member of Parliament from Zimbabwe was in Accra, Ghana, on a working visit. Our Regional Coordinator for the Africa Region, Abdul Karim Ibrahim met with him for a brief moment.
UNITE Member Hon. Daniel Molokele, met our Regional Coordinator for the Africa Region to discuss a wide range of issues with specific focus on the work being done by UNITE Parliamentarians Network for Global Health to support legislators in the Africa region.
Regarding the upcoming UNITE Global Summit, the two discussed progress of work so far. Registration for the Summit is now open, and very soon the UNITE Secretariat will also roll out important information sessions through the UNITE Global Summit Podcast.
This year, the UNITE Global Summit happening in partnership with World Health Summit will be held in Berlin, on October 16. UNITE Global Summit is the world’s leading forum for forging partnerships between parliamentarians and leaders from the global health community.
“Trust” will be a key topic for the 2024 Summit. Political trust is central to any and all political action.
A decrease in the trustworthiness of politicians and the democratic system (e.g., their credibility, fairness, competence, transparency) is apparent, hindering policymaking. The UNITE Global Summit, thus, becomes the paramount occasion for parliamentarians from across the world to meet and engage experts. It is an opportunity to ensure activities are aligned and reflect national and global needs and standards, grounded in evidence, thus enabling more effective responses to public concerns.
Furthermore, as a #HeForShe campaigner/advocate in Zimbabwe, Hon. Daniel Molokele also bemoaned the general under-representation of women in the vast majority of parliaments in the region. He added that it was important for national parliaments to take action to ensure that more women are represented in a very sustainable manner.
Finally, Hon. Molokele also reaffirmed his interest to keep working with UNITE to ensure efficient and sustainable policies for improved global health systems, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNITE thanked him for his leadership in parliamentary affairs, and commitment to human rights and global health issues.
