Join Your Delegation Campaign: 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

As we approach the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this September, we stand at a pivotal moment to address pressing global issues and set the agenda for future action, namely the ‘High-Level Meeting (HLM) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)’ and the ‘Summit of the Future’.

Parliamentarians play a critical role in national health policy development. Their participation in fora such as the UNGA is crucial to ensure that the voices of their constituents are represented and their interests are taken into account. However, in many countries, this is not the case, which limits MPs’ ability to influence global health policies and advocate for their country’s priorities.

Through the Join Your Delegation campaignUNITE encourages its members to advocate for their inclusion in their national delegation at the UNGA79.

Hon. Ricardo Baptista Leite, UNITE’s President and Founder and UNITE Member from Paraguay, Hon. Pastor Vera Bejarano were both in New York last year, at the time of the UNGA78. They both shared their perspective on why attending the UNGA and its parallel sessions can be so valuable for parliamentarians.

To support our members’s participation in these unique multilateral discussions, UNITE has developed several resources. These include a downloadable letter template for MPs to send to their governments, advocating for your inclusion in their national delegation, and two briefings, each focusing on a key event – the 2024 HLM on AMR and the Summit of the FutureThe briefings include a set of key policy asks and strategies to emphasize global health issues during and after the UNGA 79 and high-level meetings.
