A pivotal roundtable discussion, co-organized by MEPs Vytenis Andriukaitis and Tomislav Sokol, in collaboration with HIV Outcomes, UNITE, and the European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS), took place in Strasbourg, back in December.
The event brought together five prominent MEPs, HIV clinicians, academics, and people living with HIV to reaffirm commitments to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Key outcomes included advocating for a bold EU Action Plan, increased EU funding for research, tackling stigma and discrimination with a robust legal framework, and raising awareness to reshape perceptions of HIV. Collaboration is crucial to achieving SDG 3.3 and ending AIDS by 2030.
The discussions in the European Parliament emphasized the urgent need to elevate HIV on the EU’s policy agenda, specifically the need for increased funding to address gaps in HIV care. This was also the opportunity for UNITE to relaunch the Informal Working Group on HIV in the European Parliament and reaffirm our role in prioritizing the HIV agenda and pushing for innovative treatments and policies.
