Latin American MPs share experiences on mental health legislation

Hon. María José Plaza,  vice-president of the Commission on the Right to Health and Sport of Ecuador’s National Assembly, invited Hon. Saraí Núñes Cerón, MP from Mexico, both members of UNITE, to present her experience working on a national law on mental health in Mexico to 8 parliamentarians and officials from the Ministry of Health.
“The pandemic complicated the panorama of mental health care and also highlighted that there are very few hospitals specializing in mental health compared to the number of inhabitants in Mexico. We know that people who suffer from mental health illnesses can see their civileconomic and social rights violated. In Mexico, the Ley General de Salud has a chapter on mental health, which was reformed, for the last time in 2021, to make more room for a focus on human rights. It is very clear to us that mental health legislation must contemplate the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and promotion of mental health. Mental health is a global priority” stated Hon. Saraí Núñes Cerón.
