Greetings from ‘UNITE Global Parliamentarians Network to End HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis and other infectious diseases’.
We are honoured to send you the first edition of our institutional newsletter.
Infectious diseases remain one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Here are just two examples:
- 9 million people globally were living with HIV and 940,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2017 (UNAIDS, 2018 Fact Sheet)
- Viral hepatitis is responsible for an estimated 1.4 million deaths per year (World Health Organization Statistics, June 2018)
These epidemics represent major global health challenges and are simultaneously promoters and consequences of inequalities, discrimination and social injustices.
We have the scientific evidence and tools, along with the knowledge on where to continuously invest, needed to end HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis and other communicable diseases.
However, political engagement and leadership are still lacking.
Therefore, it is our mission to UNITE parliamentarians from around the world to give a coordinated, determined and effective response towards eliminating these global threats.
Through further editions of our ‘UNITE Newsletter’ we will share with you more about our initiatives, knowledge and policy best practices around communicable diseases and, most importantly, on how we can work together to achieve better global health and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Please do follow us!
It’s time to end HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis and other infectious diseases.
It’s time to UNITE.
